What I found valuable in the book, is that it does not simply tackle the question of "homosexuality", but covers the entire range of sexual ethics. In doing so, it lays bare what is obvious to anyone who cares to look - that official teaching is flawed from top to bottom, in its insistence that every sexual act must be open to conception- but does so from within the framework of the historical development of Catholic moral theology. They show how the current Vatican obsession with procreation is not inherent to that tradition, but is rather what Pope Benedict has described as the "distorting tradition" in Church history.
Kelly is correct in saying that is not an easy book to read - but it is by no means beyond the grasp of intelligent lay people, and is well worth the effort of reading, and re-reading.
